Cabinet Finishes That Actually Hold Up in a PNW Kitchen

Seattle-area kitchens are hard on cabinetry. You're cooking in a humid climate, dealing with gray light most of the year, and running a kitchen that gets real use. The finish on your cabinets takes the brunt of all of it.

There are three finish categories most homeowners choose from: paint, stain, and thermofoil. Each has a real track record — good and bad. At Prolific Design-Build & Restoration, we see both sides. Painted Cabinets: The Most Controllable Option

Paint is the most popular choice right now, and for good reason. A properly painted cabinet — meaning a quality primer, a durable topcoat, and clean application — gives you a hard, wipeable surface that handles steam and grease reasonably well.

The catch is in the prep and the product. Water-based alkyd paints and two-component conversion finishes (used by professional cabinet shops) are significantly more durable than brushed-on latex. If someone's quoting you a painted kitchen at a low price point, ask what they're spraying with. Cut corners on the coating and you'll see chips at the drawer edges inside two years.

In PNW kitchens specifically, the area around the sink and the dishwasher door edge are where painted finishes fail first. Moisture works into any small chip or seam. Semi-gloss or satin sheens hold up better than matte — they're easier to clean and less porous.

Bottom line: Paint works well when the product and prep are right. It's the best option if you want color flexibility and a clean modern look.

Stained Wood: Honest and Durable When Done Right

A quality stained and clear-coated wood cabinet is genuinely durable. The topcoat — typically a catalyzed lacquer or conversion varnish on a cabinet-grade build — does the protective work. The stain itself is just color.

Wood moves. That's the reality. In a King County home with a crawlspace or a basement, seasonal humidity swings are real. Solid wood doors can show joint lines over time. That's not a failure — it's wood behaving like wood. Choosing a stable species (maple, alder, or cherry are common here) and a quality clear finish reduces that movement.

Stained cabinets tend to hide minor wear better than paint. A small scuff on a painted door is obvious. On a stained wood door with grain texture, it blends in.

Bottom line: Stained wood is a mid-to-high investment that pays off in longevity if you use cabinet-grade material and a proper topcoat. Don't skimp on the clear coat.

Thermofoil: Know What You're Getting

Thermofoil cabinets are MDF wrapped in a heat-fused vinyl film. They're budget-friendly, uniform in color, and easy to clean — until they're not.

The failure mode is specific and common: heat and moisture cause the vinyl to peel away from the substrate, usually near the oven, the dishwasher, or any area with steam exposure. Once thermofoil starts peeling, it can't be repaired cleanly. The whole door needs to go.

We see thermofoil failures regularly on restoration calls. It's not that the product is poorly made — it's that it gets installed in applications where it will be exposed to exactly the conditions it can't handle.

Bottom line: Thermofoil is a reasonable low-cost choice for lower-traffic areas or rentals. In a PNW kitchen with a real cook in it, budget for replacement sooner than you'd expect.
