Why Paint Decisions Hit Different in the Northwest

Seattle-area homes don't get a dry season to recover. Between October and June, your exterior paint faces near-constant moisture, low UV, and temperature swings that push water into every small crack. Color is the fun part. Durability is the part that matters.

Here's what we've learned working on King County homes since 2020 — both building new and restoring what failed.

Start With Prep, Not Color

The palette is secondary. Paint fails in the PNW almost always because of what happened before the first coat.

Bare wood needs a quality primer. Skipping primer on raw or repaired wood is the single most common mistake we see on restoration jobs. Primer seals the surface and gives topcoats something to bond to. On cedar or fir — both common in older King County homes — use a stain-blocking oil-based primer or a shellac-based product on any resinous spots.

Fix the moisture source first. Peeling paint isn't a paint problem. It's usually a water intrusion problem. Leaky flashing, failed caulk at windows and trim, or poor gutter drainage will destroy a fresh paint job within a year. We see this repeatedly on restoration projects. Repaint after you've fixed the root cause — not before.

Two coats minimum. One coat looks fine on day one. It won't look fine in three years.

Choose the Right Sheen for Each Surface

In a wet climate, finish matters as much as color.

• Flat and matte finishes hold moisture and are difficult to clean. Avoid them on siding and trim.
• Satin is the sweet spot for most siding. It sheds water, stands up to cleaning, and doesn't look plasticky in overcast light.
• Semi-gloss belongs on trim, doors, and soffits. It's easier to wipe down and holds up to the extra moisture exposure those surfaces get.
• Gloss on full siding walls is a personal call, but it shows surface imperfections more — and older King County homes have plenty of those.

Palette Choices That Work With Gray Light

Flat overcast light is the default here from fall through spring. That changes how colors read on a house.

Deep, saturated colors read well. Navy, forest green, charcoal, and deep slate all look intentional under gray skies. They don't wash out. They also hide the light surface dirt and organic growth (algae, mildew) that's inevitable in a wet climate.

Warm whites and creams age better than bright whites. Bright white siding shows every bit of grime and oxidizes faster. Warmer whites — think Swiss Coffee, Alabaster, or similar off-whites — stay cleaner-looking longer and photograph well for resale.

Mid-tone greens and greiges are low-maintenance. These tones blend naturally with Pacific Northwest landscaping. Small color shifts from weathering or light organic growth are less visible than on lighter or higher-contrast colors.

Avoid light yellows and pastels on siding. They show mildew staining quickly and look faded fast in our light conditions.

Use Paint Rated for Wet Climates

Not all exterior paints are equal. Look for products with built-in mildewcide and marketed specifically for high-humidity or wet-climate use. Sherwin-Williams Emerald and Duration lines, Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior, and similar premium products have formulations designed to resist moisture and color fade. Mid and high-tier products cost more per gallon but require less frequent repainting — that's the tradeoff.

If you're painting over a previously painted surface with unknown history, test adhesion first. Pressure washing alone doesn't tell you whether the existing paint will bond correctly.
