After a leak, the water you can see is rarely all of it - moisture wicks into wall cavities, under flooring, and behind cabinets, where it can feed mold for weeks before anything shows. Knowing the signs is how you catch it before it becomes a bigger repair.
What to watch for
- Musty smell that lingers after things look dry - the most reliable early sign of trapped moisture.
- Discoloration or staining on drywall, ceilings, or baseboards, often yellow or brown.
- Bubbling or peeling paint, or wallpaper lifting at the seams.
- Warped or cupped flooring, or tile that sounds hollow underfoot.
- Soft or spongy spots in drywall or subfloor.
- A spike in the water bill with no explanation, which can indicate a hidden supply leak.
Why "looks dry" isn't dry. Surfaces dry long before the materials behind them do. Without measuring, you're guessing - and sealing up a wet cavity is exactly how a small leak becomes a mold remediation.
What actually confirms it. Moisture meters and thermal imaging find water inside walls and floors without tearing them open. When we respond to a leak, we map moisture across the affected area and document the drying, so nothing gets closed up wet.
